Mobile App

Kusler’s Pharmacy

A convenient mobile order app for customized medications and supplements.

This project is a mobile order app for Kusler’s Pharmacy, a compounding pharmacy that specializes in crafting custom prescriptions for patients. The project objective was to design a seamless and enjoyable experience for refilling prescriptions. To fulfill this objective, the app provides intuitive refill and consultation booking flows. By creating a personal profile, users can seamlessly refill their prescriptions, receive personalized consultations, shop for recommended supplements, and set preferences for medication notifications.

My Role

I was the sole designer for this project—I conceived of the UX and visual design concepts from developing the design strategy to wire framing to prototyping.

The Problem

Users shouldn’t have to feel frustration or confusion when accessing the medications that keep them healthy—this should be a seamless experience.

The problem that created the context for this project is that many pharmacies use archaic systems that often prompt users to make a laborious phone call. Despite the recent popularity of mobile food and grocery orders, medication refills often require a more cumbersome process. Pharmacies that do offer mobile refills may lack visual design appeal.

Competitive Analysis

I analyzed two prescription apps—each with distinct primary functions—to gain insight into the pros and cons of the experiences they offer. By examining Refill Rx Mobile and Pillo Health in depth, I determined that an app with clearly defined action items, descriptive copy, and a modern aesthetic would provide an intuitive and enjoyable user experience.

Refill Rx Mobile is an app that provides mobile prescription refills. This app offers the simple service of refilling prescriptions as its primary function. Users can add personal information such as their preferred pharmacy and delivery method.

Pillo is a healthcare mobile app that provides daily medication reminders. The app is customizable to each individual user—they can set specific intake times, add their complete list of medications, and track their symptoms.

The User Journey

In order to better understand the user, I sought to identify their likely routines—actions that users would perform frequently in order to meet their daily, weekly, and monthly medical needs. In order for the Kusler’s app to provide a useful and effective service, it would need to accommodate routines such as refilling medications on time, ordering favorite supplements, and communicating with providers when questions arise.

To design an optimal experience for users to easily refill prescriptions, order supplements, and message a pharmacist, I looked to a few key questions for guidance:

  • How can users easily view their prescriptions?

  • What key information would help users learn more about the medications that have been prescribed for them?

  • When and how should users be able to communicate with their care team?

  • How can this app provide the optimal experience for users when shopping for supplements?

How might we create an app that allows for users to easily and independently order refills of medications while still feeling supported by their care team?

Style & Fonts

For this app, I opted for a dark backdrop with light, streamlined fonts and subtle pops of color. The app features playful illustrations and high-quality product photography to give the experience a high-end feel. Custom medication compounding may be a medical necessity for some, but the goal was to provide a luxe and effortless experience for the often-mundane task of refilling prescriptions.

Typography

In order to ensure a cohesive visual experience that provides clarity through text hierarchy, I developed a design system that would guide the various text sizes and styles. I designed the font ramp with scalability in mind, so that using the app on a variety of devices would provide a pleasurable and functional experience.

Colors

In order to provide both a beautiful and functional user experience, I created a color scheme that offers a sophisticated and bold aesthetic. With accessibility in mind, I implemented a high-contrast color scheme using light-colored typography against a dark backdrop for visual ease. The dark mode design is intended to promote comfort and healing for users of this pharmaceutical app who may suffer from a neurological condition.

The User Experience

Home Page

The home page of the app is designed to provide key information up front in order of relevance to the user.

Goals

  • Provide an at-a-glance overview to guide users to a variety of options within the app

  • Provide a home base for all functions of the app

Experience

  • Discover quick paths to all necessary tasks including viewing prescriptions, starting a refill, and shopping for supplements.

My Prescriptions

The “My Prescriptions” page is designed to provide users with a complete list of their current and past medications. Users can access more detailed information on each item by clicking into a medication detail page. The medication detail pages provide key information with useful and digestible visuals including separate cards, icons, and an intake tracker that uses color and check marks to indicate daily completion. I designed the “Refill” CTA to be a floating button so that users could easily access this important feature at any time.

Goals

  • Provide users with a comprehensive and easy-to-view list of medications (both current and past)

  • Provide quick access to additional resources such as the “Consult a Pharmacist” feature

Experience

  • Find a complete list of medication names and dosages with the option to learn more about each item or reach out to a pharmacist with questions

Message or Consult a Pharmacist

The messaging feature of the app is intended to provide users with a sense of comfort and support throughout their entire experience. With this goal in mind, the messaging feature is available in the tab bar, while the option to “Consult a Pharmacist” is called out on a number of pages including the Home page and the “My Prescriptions” page.

Goals

  • Provide easy access to additional support from a professional care team

  • Offer a seamless booking flow that makes users feel comfortable and satisfied when booking a consultation

Experience

  • Easily message a pharmacist or book a brief consultation when questions arise during the ordering process

View Your Profile

The user profile is designed to store all personal information that may streamline the ordering process for users in the future. Users will be able to view past orders to remember which supplements they’ve ordered in the past and can manage notifications that provide helpful reminders when their medications are getting low.

Goals

  • Provide quick access to order history, favorite products, and helpful notifications

  • Store personal information such as address and preferred payment methods for a streamlined checkout process

Experience

  • Discover order history for an efficient re-ordering experience. Set notification preferences to avoid running out of medications

Shop for Supplements

The shopping feature of the app is designed to offer users a luxe browsing experience that transforms a daily chore into a pleasurable ritual. I used high-quality product photography that stands apart from other health and wellness experiences in order to create a positive and delightful shopping experience for users.

Goals

  • Offer users a wide variety of products to browse in a streamlined and aesthetic shopping experience

  • Provide a seamless checkout flow for an efficient ordering experience

Experience

  • Browse a variety of new and recommended products or head to your personal profile to quickly re-order favorite supplements
